Chelsea Hopper - Dead Tired

In Chelsea Hopper’s photographic series »Dead Tired«, the connotations are as a immediate as they are poetic. The elderly sun-bathers pictured on the idyllic swathes of Perth coastline evoke the »quaint illusion of death« as they bake them selves into a hedonistic irreverence, smelling like coconuts. Strange and lovely.

»Near« is an ongoing series by Melbourne based photographer Katrin Koenning. It depicts transient moments of her family which I find to be touching and relatable. This is a combination in photography almost impossible to find at the moment. Much of Katrin’s work investigates the ordinary and everyday, and is concerned with place and belonging. The gradual disappearance of Aboriginal figures and culture from the colonial landscape is one of the great tragic themes of Australian art. The reinsertion of that Indigenous presence into our history and the questioning of the idea of a shared national identity have underpinned the work of many contemporary Indigenous artists, including the photographer, performance and video artist, Christian Thompson. Thomas Breakwell grew up in the outer suburbs of Victoria, Australia. I now have no idea the whereabouts of Thom as he has been traveling for the past two years around Indonesia, China and Russia. A few months before he left, Thom exhibited these at CCP in Melbourne which won him the Documentary Award. Squats documents those intriguing hidden sites that are often occupied by experimental youths, the homeless or those possibly on the run. This series has always stuck with me and I'm sure more of Thom's work will stay with me too - once I work out where he is. You can find more of Thom's work here: www.thomasbreakwell.com
Nathan Beard

Nathan Beard, born 1986, is an inter-disciplinary artist based in Perth, Western Australia. He uses a diverse range of media to explore his Thai-Australian heritage, ideas of loss, nostalgia and memory. Earlier this year he undertook a residency at Speedy Grandma in Bangkok, Thailand. During this residency the Nathan visited his home town of Nakhon Nayok, using his mothers abandoned house there and the surrounding local area as a site for the production of a new series of works.
