Maria Antelman

Photographer

Maria Antelman makes photographs, videos, sound installations and sculptures, by using new and old technologies. Her works point to our interaction with machines and the complicated systems these weave around us. Interested in our experience of the past, present and future, while we are immersed in the endless digital now, she is trying to decode an existential state of being in the abstract structure of our reality. Maria Antelman (born Athens, Greece) lives and works in New York City. She holds a BA in Art History from Complutense University in Madrid, Spain and an MFA (2011) from Columbia University. In New York her work has been shown at Apex Art, Room East, Ryan Lee Gallery, Gavin’s Brown Enterprise at Passerby; in Brooklyn at 247365; in Athens at Eugenides Foundation, Onassis Foundation, The National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST), The War Museum, The Apartment Gallery; in San Francisco at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Jack Hanley Gallery, Southern Exposure; in Oakland at Mills College Art Museum; in Pittsburgh at Wood Street Galleries; in Portland at Melanie Flood Projects, in London at The Agency; in Madrid at La Casa Encendida; in Florence at Fondazione Pitti; in Milan at Gio Marconi Gallery. She has been awarded a grant from the J.F. Costopoulos Foundation and residencies at ISCP in New York and at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn.
