Max Creasy - Casual Relationships

Apr 28, 2021

Casual Relationships is an exploration of how culture is constructed. I have taken a contemporary social science idea that social groups, eg a group of graphic designers, can endorse new ideas within the group and this repeated advocacy by group members brings them into cultural recognition i.e. culture. I wanted to test this idea and try and see how it related to visual culture. Firstly I carefully curated images I was seeing repeated within different social groups (a form of endorsement). I then simulated these images through my own camera to question what they mean. Finally I placed them back into an image sequence to try and see what it is about these images that makes them approved.

The title Casual Relationships refers to the idea of an intimate encounter but with no context. In this instance the images have no context and we observe the encounters they create with other images.

The book and image sequence is underpinned by online photography (thumbnail and enlarged image). We (myself and the designers OK-RM) slightly skewed the book design, for instance the title page is not the first page in the sequence within, to question how we understand books to operate.
