Bodies and Space
Nov 18, 2022 - Alena Schmick
It’s cinema and sculpture that inspire me, rarely photography. Two opposing approaches to showing bodies.
Sculptures occupy a space, are matter and surface, have weight – things photography can never have and that’s why it fascinates me so much.
Film shows bodies in motion, in transformation, in communication.

— The bodies of the young men, moving through the night as a bristling group, bare shoulders shine in the streetlight. (Beach Rats, Eliza Hittman, 2017) — youtu.be/WZ-ZGgnmUKQ
— The trapped body in a foreign city – trapped in the hotel room, trapped in its role, trapped in its latex clothing. (Irma Vep, Olivier Assayas, 1996) —youtu.be/EwnHcALHxiw
— Jodie Foster’s struggling and determined body as she runs alone through a forest in the first scene of The Silence of the Lambs. (Jonathan Demme, 1991) — https://youtu.be/8Sx08_OSXlY
