The Darkroom
Nov 21, 2022 - Alena Schmick
“I sit down in front of my sheet of photographic paper and I think.” (Man Ray, 1930)
Even though I love the crisp cruelty of the digital, I’m always drawn back to the darkroom. It exerts a childlike fascination for me, like a magic trick that never loses its effect. Washing the photographic paper in liquids to reveal the invisible, almost like a sacred ritual influenced by dark powers.
A scene in my favourite film, Claire Denis’s Trouble Every Day, depicts not only the main character burning in her house, but the film material burning itself. I am taken by the physical presence of the film material, which is as sensitive as the skin.
