Backstory of my photo featured in Der Greif 15: « The Computer »
Dec 27, 2022 - Jade Joannès
A photograph from my series was selected by Saskia Groneberg, for the latest issue of Der Greif.
“The Computer” brings together two photographs, they were taken a year apart. The first in January 2020, the one that appears on the computer screen, and the second in February 2021, the one that shows this computer screen.
This computer screen is my grandmother’s, where she spends most of her days. She lives in Saint-Denis in the Paris suburbs, in a small apartment. I found the “mise en abyme” improbable. It’s something that fascinates one a lot as a child and an adult, this repetition of almost identical material.
A few very discreet details change; the computer itself has been replaced, the pots have been reversed, and a photo of my little sister and I appears. This photo shows what has remained and what has changed over the course of a year in an old woman’s house. It questions the way we occupy a place every day, how we live in it, what we highlight, the postcards we receive, and the photos we look at of our grandchildren.
