Artist Blog

Every week an artist whose single image was published by Der Greif is given a platform in which to blog about contemporary photography.

Introduction

Jan 11, 2023 - Josip Artuković

Prompted by the need to define the mute presence that underlaid and flavored my interactions with life, a presence that made itself familiar only by the duration of its persistence, I started to trace my family’s emotional history and seek reflections of that uncanny feeling in my surrounding environment.

Photography, with its characteristics and its powerful ability to visually define reality, provided itself as a perfect tool for bringing out to the surface that which is too subtle to be fully captured by the conscious mind. What started as an exploration, developed into a study of the intricate relations between the present and the past, the inner and the outer thus revealing the structure that further informed the direction and the identity of this quest.

Throughout the process, some images surfaced and some had to be brought up while others had to be searched for but in any case, they all reflected what lurked underneath. Although the presence seems to be ancient and engraved in the very line of our history, therefore unavoidable, in the short term incurable, the mentioned ability of the medium to visually define realities helped to get a clearer and more defined picture of the thing, helped to identify and locate it which then consequently helped in dealing with it.

In the next handful of blog posts in the following days, I’ll be expanding on the conceptual backdrop of my photographic series Tea Soaked Madeleines more specifically as well as discussing aesthetic and other types of influences.
