Artist Blog

Every week an artist whose single image was published by Der Greif is given a platform in which to blog about contemporary photography.

Inspiration: Latino Artists

Feb 05, 2023 - Amanda Lopez

“Guadalupe” is part of a rich tradition of Latino artists like Delilah Montoya, Yolanda López, and Alma López, who’ve explored Guadalupe iconography in their practices.

I encourage everyone to look up their work because the history of women and people of color in photography is not regularly taught in school or shared in museums.

I learned about these artists by going to art shows at places like Galería de la Raza in San Francisco, La Raza Galeria Posada in Sacramento, and the Vincent Price Art Museum in Los Angeles. Most recently, I read the book “Latinx Photography in the United States: A Visual History” by Elizabeth Ferrer. I highly recommend it to folks who want to learn more about the history of photography and the contributions of Latinos to the art form.
