Intergenerational Trauma
Jan 13, 2023 - Josip Artuković
Burdensome memories threading my family’s line are specific to it only to an extent. Some of those memories were induced by tragic events and interpersonal relationships, others were brought upon by surrounding social, economic and political forces. On one side there are moments of immense grief, loss of loved ones, migration and physical hardship, while on the other, a broader set of historical occurrences.
The history of Croatia, specifically relating to the project in its western region Slavonia, is marked by the Croatian War of Independence. Even if the war didn’t directly affect the members of my family or if my father didn’t participate in the conflict, the consequential social and economical turmoil would be enough to influence the bringing up of generations that followed afterwards. Either way, unknown memories and unfelt anxieties largely constitute the sense of the luring presence.
Photography allowed me to look at the markers and records of trauma and put them into correlation that facilitates their study and comparison. Which perturbations are my own and which are inherited?
