Monuments

Jan 26, 2017 - Ignasi Casas and John Gribben

When I shot monuments I felt like I was finally putting together two of my favourite photography genres: still life and landscape.

The idea behind this project was to talk about the transformation of London – the city I live in.

I collected waste from demolished buildings in my neighbourhood, which ended up giving me all the material that I needed to create the megalithic structures, which are shown in this series.
I first saw megalithic monuments on a trip to Mallorca when I was 13 years old and I remember being very impressed by their scale and the amount of symbolism that they carried, usually related with burial rites.

Through my poor architectural skills, leftovers from what was once a building which people inhabited ended up as a primitive structure without that ‘liveable’ characteristic; transcending from a more pragmatic use to a more spiritual one.
