In an old box I found a photo of my grandmother. My grandmother, Ninel, who ran away from home at the age of 17 to fight in World War II. She sent her mother a photograph from the front in 1945. On the back it was written: „let this dead photograph remind you of me alive“. I remembered again the stories of war she told me when I was a little girl, stories about heroes and fighting.

And I asked myself how do people in Poland play the war that is heavily romanticized in public debates; in other words, what exactly is idealized in Polish memory of the war?
