The Language of Things
Jan 16, 2023 - Josip Artuković
After being occupied with photography for a few years, I realized why I gravitated towards the field. Through dedicated studies of the medium’s theory and readings of great meditations on its nature, it occurred to me that the way my mind interacts with reality naturally led me into using tools and methods for capturing images.
One thing I was so starkly aware of since developing consciousness is the act of looking. Everything that could be looked at was worth the act and everything that was seen was in some abstract way understood. Moreover, it was as if seemingly discarded pieces of the environment longed for communication and visual acceptance. The back wall of a house, worn-out chicken coup’s ground, tree or a rock, all that usually wasn’t considered notable had a strange affection. Although I could not articulate those sensations and interests for a long time, they guided me nevertheless.
The medium of photography then finally allowed me to express that specific way of seeing and understanding. It provided me with means by which the language of things and the reality of objects can be mediated. With the concentrated attentiveness of a camera, the subjects of my curiosity and affinity were now acquiring voice and significance.
