The State of Things
Mar 07, 2014 - Sara-Lena Maierhofer
I like to see photography in analogy to noise. Sound is the product of the collision of two materials, as well as a photograph is the result of the coming together of two materials: light hits a photosensitive material. The product of this encounter is the image. A good deal of the overcome concept of photography as an objective entity of accurate depiction and realism is founded on this short acquaintance with reality. Because of its mechanical character and the illusion of the absence of any human influence during the exposure of an image, photography was seen as an imprint of nature. Though we can all agree on the fact that photography was never just a mere copy of reality, not even in pre-digital times, I am still drawn to the romantic notion of photography as an imprint, some kind of mark or trace. The work of Paul Schwaderer deals exactly with this dualism of image and reality: With various materials, like silicone, photosensitive sculptures or videos he reproduces the world around him and traces the errors in translation of one level into another. In a very poetic way. If you are in Berlin you can see some of his work at his new exhibition "Die Freiheit datenarmer Zustände". He focuses on the gap in human perception: The state of things and their connections, for which there are no terms, no categories, and no images yet. On display are video projections, silicone objects, installations and voice recordings. The exhibition runs until the 21st of March.
