Words and Image
Dec 10, 2022 - Sarah Stone
Words leave an after-taste, just like an image leaves a stamp on your mind. They appeal to me as much as images, creating my own chronology of words is as appealing as creating a narrative through images – connecting the visual dots as the lines between the letters are likewise linked.
For my project ‘ANNA’, I decided it was about time to combine my two great adorations in life (next up will be music and visuals) – and so I kept a written record of the romantic days I spent in England in order to give the project a diaristic element – however, I decided to put these chunks of writing as the back of the book and on a thinner paper, as not to intervene with the fluidity of the images because they were two different stories.
Then came a third element – quotations from email exchanges between my mother and I, which was reduced to removing my response and keeping only her writing. These snippets are rather comical, revealing the reality of the banality of her retired routine. Therefore, they interjected the images – and it was debated whether or not to include them, since the quotes demonstrated a starkly different character of the women that I was visually portraying. I decided to keep the writing in the midst of the images because this project, although directed by myself, was a collaboration and it felt right to have my mother’s innocent character to contrast the strict and stern woman that I project her as.
