2010/2013 »There is nothing to see in Rustavi today«, the Georgians told me. (The literal interpretation of the Georgian term for »nothing« is: »no color«) However, the historical remains of what used to be a thriving site of the Soviet industry are still remarkable for the keen observer. In Rustavi, Joseph Stalin once installed the biggest steel- and ironworks of the Caucasus. From 1947 on, »Plattenbauten« (prefabricated slab-construction buildings) for thousands of working families grew out of the steppe – without running water, electricity or heating. The fall of the Soviet Union proved disastrous for Rustavi, as it also caused the collapse of the integrated Soviet economy. The city of Rustavi was a key part of this economy. As most of its industrial plants were shut down, two-thirds of the city‘s population became unemployed and social problems like shrinking population numbers, high crime rates and acute poverty emerged. What happens today in the pale facades of the satellite city Tbilisis? I drifted through its orbit finding helpful neighborhoods and great hospitality, a lot of men playing cards and chess in the streets and a young generation defining new rules and having big dreams. It was like a polymorphic mixture of remaining signs from the soviet era, the strong orthodox belief, traditional legends and western dreams, the calmness in the streets and the life in the houses. In my series I combined some of my pictures of Rustavi with pictures I‘ve made from a YouTube-video of a small concert given by the international well-known »Rustavi Choir« in 2009. The Georgian style of polyphonic singing is very unique. Together with traditional costumes and dancing, it characterizes the Georgian State Academic Ensemble »Rustavi«, which was founded in 1968. The style of set-design in this video reminds me of Rustavi itself. With the combination oft the pictures, I am trying to illustrate the process of the continuous alteration of my initially sterotypic perceptions.

Hello! This is my last post and I like to thank again the whole 'Der Greif'-Team and my photographer friends being part of the blogging week. Last but not least I am happy to invite you to the 33. Bielefelder Fotosymposium in the upcoming week. All lectures will be in German this time, so I'll switch to German for the description. When I visited Stefanie for the first time, I discovered a small portrait of Ruth Wurmhöringer. Deeply moved by her expression, I've started to ask Stefanie about her project. On the one hand fascinated, on the other hand shocked by some experiences she had with her demented grandmother (1920-2009) she began to take videos in 2004, adding photography and drawings for the following years. I like to go on with presenting the work of Alexandra Polina. The main subject of her work has always concentrated on the topics of immigration and identity, especially their social and emotional aspects. Having spent twenty years in her home land, Alexandra moved to Germany, which was a life-changing experience. It is Sunday, so that means family day in the broader sense. Today and tomorrow, I like to introduce artists who are working on projects about their own family and their origin. I will start with Paul Koncewicz, whose work I like since I saw pictures the first time some years ago. He is mainly staging people in their personal setting. After 'My Parents Love Each Other... Looking at Daniela's work provokes curiosity to look closer to different themes of nature and science and invites to question the apparent proof of authentic (pseudo-)scientific photography. Daniela's focus lies on topics related to a presence of absence, like non-places in the former exclusion zone at the GDR's border (project “Freitag bis Mittwoch”), Cryptozoology (Study of hidden animals. Search for animals whose existence has not been proven, related project: “Herr Vogel und ich kommen zu keinem Ergebnis”) or Pluto, which used to be a planet.The concepts of her work are oscillating between pseudo scientific interpretations in form of pictures and factual, 'objective', scientific material including media-archives. After showing you Renke's work, who is attacking and partly destroying his pictures with different kinds of fluids, cigarettes and scissors and currently working with collage techniques as well, I would like to introduce you to Barbara Proschak. She ist also thinking about and working with cuttings and different layers on the picture in a open way. Doing so, she is questioning the fragmentation of the body with the focus on skin.Using the negative as a carrier, she is transferring the structure of the skin. These small structures can transform in different ways and can get huge in the printing process. Since I have got to know her, she has constantly been investigating in themes around skin, skin print and photographic print (traces), women, the body and maps, using mixed techniques. By doing so, she is creating and discovering a very personal world related to wide landscapes, maps, universe and medical science. After finishing her Bachelor's degree in Bielefeld, she went to Leipzig, where she is currently studying in the class of Tina Bara at the HGB. (more…)

Dear »Greif«, thank you very much for giving me the possibility of blogging and showing my work. Your project is great and challenging (either for you and the audience), so I'm looking forward to sneeze into the soon upcoming magazine. So, hello everybody! I want to set foot with a (picture)bunch of colorful flowers and related things taken by Renke Brandt, who once told me: »I always liked to photograph flowers because of the variety of colors and forms they have. It`s very easy to get a good picture if a flower is the motif. But there are so many other things at home with a photogenic appearance which are rarely photographed - for example cleaning supplies. So I started this work of colorful still lives and named it after my favorite hair wash product 'Shampoo Magnolia'.« (more…)
