Artist Feature

Every week an artist is featured whose single image was published by Der Greif. The Feature shows the image in the original context of the series.

Benjamin Schmidt - Ohne Titel

Oct 03, 2018

I’ve always been drawn to the casual, en passent moments photography can capture. The moments you can easily miss with the blink of an eye, but – if recorded – reveal so much about the human condition ((or: about what makes us human)). This interest in people and their own specific cosmos of actions, interests, desires or struggles is a central focal point of my photographic practice.

This series has become quite an important point of reference for myself in regards to my work. It is a group of images, which originated in a time of transition – I had finished the academy but had not yet established my practice within the world of magazine photography. This moment in time contained so many undefined lines. It was a time of developing a way of looking at things, defined by a form of searching for or rather sharpening the gaze. I appreciate how these photographs show this search for a focus. They touch on themes like childhood, love, loneliness, transgression, a zest for life. In this regard they are among my most personal pictures. They manage to record those fleeting moments of our lives, which a second later would have been gone and lost forever.

Back then I did not set out to make this specific series of works, but rather the images accumulated and their interconnections, their relations became visible over time. They all display a similar stance or approach – and they share the conscious reduction of technical means. I purposefully limited myself by using only analog film and just one prime lens. I did not prepare the shoot and tried to let go of commonly accepted rules or parameters such as avoiding the midday sun. In a way this stripping down of my acquired tools forced me to develop and rely on my impulses, my hunches. I could never fully control the outcome of a photograph, there was an openness and trust in the process. Looking back at this selection over a decade later, it’s the faith in the photographic intuition and the almost experimental freedom and playful detachedness that still holds a significance for me today, maybe even more than I realized back then
