Artist Feature
Every week an artist is featured whose single image was published by Der Greif. The Feature shows the image in the original context of the series.
Ignasi Casas & John Gribben - Flux
Jan 25, 2017
Flux is a project that aimed to find a common ground between the two photographers involved. The collaboration was set in one of our studios in a very casual way, having in mind that we were going use the material within that room.
It was a very interesting process in which both of us understood what is very different in our work but more importantly what we have in common to create a constructive flow that resulted in this series.
This ‘work flow’ transcended to our work resulting in a study about the movement (Flux) of basic studio materials.
Artist Blog
The blog of Der Greif is written entirely by the artists who have been invited to doing an Artist-Feature. Every week, we have a different author.

Anthony Caro – Month of May 1963
Feb 01, 2017 - Ignasi Casas and John Gribben
I love to look at scuplture as a source of inspiration and particularly always find myself coming back to the work of Anthony Caro. I’m particularly drawn to the ever changing movement of his work and flow as the viewer walks around.

Lena Amuat & Zoë Meyer – Mathematische Modelle
Jan 31, 2017 - Ignasi Casas and John Gribben
I randomly discovered Mathematische Modelle in a bookshop in London. I was captivated by the yellow cover as it had pictures actually attached to it. I thought that this made this book also a particularly nice object.
Once opened, a collection of amazing objects are displayed in almost a catalogue-like fashion.
The way that Lena and Zoe photograph those objects is very direct and simple, almost cold.
Some have a simple background and others more complex ones; always achieving very interesting colour palettes.
The objects look like they were taken for a bizarre museum and are all somehow related with mathematical models describing geometry and movement. It feels like a slightly uncomfortable memory about human knowledge.
Lena’s and Zoe’s work gravitates around objects that represent different knowledge systems such as educational tools or religious objects and they usually present their images through installations.

Pawel Fabjanski – Untitled
Jan 30, 2017 - Ignasi Casas and John Gribben
I came across Pawel Fabjanski’s work when I was looking at the Creative Review Annual and instantly became fascinated with his work, particularly this series shot for an art book on the Polish Film School. They instantly get your attention, make you look again and question the image – drawing you in to the space.

Xavier Ribas – Sanctuaries
Jan 28, 2017 - Ignasi Casas and John Gribben
I discovered this Catalan photographer during my time at university. His raw style as well as his approach to describe the relationship between human culture and landscape or surroundings was always very inspiring to me.
Among other great projects, his work “Sanctuaries” from 1998–2002 consisted of different series such Stones or Flowers among others.
The overall idea is how human activity leaves a mark on every neutral piece of land through the symbolism of that specific activity and hence transforming that place forever.
In the series “Stones” he takes us to random places in the woods, right next to a path where someone has placed a stone in order to sit down and rest. This single gesture is a powerful evocation to the house or the home where people seek intimacy after walking on that path.
Through that simple act of setting a break or resting point in that path our perception of it changes, transforming it from a distant neutral place to a much warmer and intimate one.
This stone next to the tree that provides a shadow evokes a presence that has vanished and this is a leitmotif through the Sanctuary series.
Whereas in the series Flowers he explores the themes of loss and separation through the bouquets left on the side of the ditch when someone gets killed on the road, Stones explores the opposite effect: the evocation of a place where people get together, a room, an inhabited place.

LOBBY
Jan 27, 2017 - Ignasi Casas and John Gribben
I wanted to share a recent commission for LOBBY magazine where I was asked to create images to go alongside a fictional essay on a satirical story referencing Brexit.
I created the images by collating different materials and piecing them together on set to create images that connate uncertainty and balance.

Monuments
Jan 26, 2017 - Ignasi Casas and John Gribben
When I shot monuments I felt like I was finally putting together two of my favourite photography genres: still life and landscape.
The idea behind this project was to talk about the transformation of London – the city I live in.
I collected waste from demolished buildings in my neighbourhood, which ended up giving me all the material that I needed to create the megalithic structures, which are shown in this series.
I first saw megalithic monuments on a trip to Mallorca when I was 13 years old and I remember being very impressed by their scale and the amount of symbolism that they carried, usually related with burial rites.
Through my poor architectural skills, leftovers from what was once a building which people inhabited ended up as a primitive structure without that ‘liveable’ characteristic; transcending from a more pragmatic use to a more spiritual one.
