Jessica Backhaus - Confinement in Berlin

“Wer nicht denken will fliegt raus” (Who is unwilling to think is dismissed)
Joseph Beuys, 1977
“I was inspired by this quote from Joseph Beuys during my confinement in Berlin. I felt it very relevant during this particular time. It seems to me that Beuys wasn’t compromising and always followed his deep convictions regardless of how radical they might be.
This series was created during the first lockdown in collaboration with the curator Diana Poole in the spring of 2020. She got invited by Der Greif to curate the May edition of “Guest Room”. This global crisis is challenging us. Everywhere we are forced to adapt to this unprecedented situation. I have been using this time of stillness to experiment with various new series. Some of the works in this series were directly inspired by some of the works Beuys did; the Capri Battery, 1985, Das Erdtelefon, 1968 and the Fat chair, 1964. To a certain degree, I embraced the limitations of space. I was forced to look carefully at what is surrounding me in my own personal environment. In some ways taking photographs can be lonesome, but somehow I enjoy this loneliness while at work, because it allows me to feel, to see, it brings me fulfillment and it makes me feel alive.”
