Robert Schlotter - Memories and how to get them

Jul 25, 2012

Artist Blog

The blog of Der Greif is written entirely by the artists who have been invited to doing an Artist-Feature. Every week, we have a different author.

Ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki, Baltic Sea 2008

During my stay in Helsinki, working for Jari Silomäki, I read 'Amor Vacui', an essay published in the german magazine Bauwelt, which gave the title to my series AMOR VACUI grown by straying through the suburbs of Helsinki and its surrounding cityscapes.

Flowerstills

- Robert Schlotter

Since more than ten years I'm collecting private super8 and 8mm movies. The collection is still going on but it needs a lot of time to view all the material. A few weeks ago I found a special flowerwork. Using a moviecamera, the author took endless stillpictures of blossoms in his garden. Her are some of the first archive-reproductions. After my works KAMPF and Memories and how to get them, my work with this kind of material is still going on…

Hotel Belvedere, Dubrovnik/Croatia 2008

In 2007 I was traveling through Croatia. Awaking one morning after a horrible night in the park of Hotel Zagreb, I became aware of these often destroyed and unused hotelcoplexes along the Croatian coast. Again in Croatia in 2008 I started to work on my series Hotel Croatia which at last had been shown at this years Copenhagen Photofestival.

Shrinking Cities

- Robert Schlotter

mg class="alignnone size-full wp-image-9680" title="Halle -Neustadt" src="http://dergreif-online.de/www/wp/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/halle-neustadt-scheiben.jpg" alt="Scheiben in Halle-Neustadt, 2005" width="400" height="500" /> A picture I made in Halle-Neustadt in 2005, the first time I've been there. In the same year I started to work in another city quarter, touched by nearly the same shrinking problem like Halle-Neustadt. For about one year I lived in Halle-Silberhöhe, documented the urban shrinking processes and made portraits of the people who were living there.

Beyond Cold War II

On 13th of August 2011 they remembered the 60th anniversary of the erection of the Berlin Wall. As a present the Museum became a piece of the original Berlin Wall form the senate of the city Berlin. All in all a really strange situation and arrangement which made me think about working on a special museumseries.

Honeycombs © 2012 Anna Domnick

Three years ago I started the blog Disappearing Architecture together with Marc Marquardt. We're showing photographic works by international Artists, dealing with questions on processes of disappearance and transformation in architecture, urbanism and landscape. The latest shown work is Anna Domnicks Honeycombs. Pictures from disused buildings made with precast concrete slabs in Halle-Neustadt/Germany - one of the former GDRs prestige building projects, designed as an ideal communist city.
