Ever since publishing the newspaper Deadline, which topped numerous best-of lists and won a special mention at the Paris-Photo Aperture book award last year, everyone knows that Will is thoroughly interested in the medium, the history and the social impact of newspapers. Already in his amazing collage Down These Mean Streets he used hundreds of newspaper clippings alongside his own large format photography to tell the story about the financial crisis in the US. Of all the newspaper works Will Steacy has made, the headline collages are amongst my favorite. They are absolutely amazing. Take your time and really read them. [vimeo video_id="143865219" width="1000" height="563“] It is always special to work with Ester Vonplon, on one side because I admire her work enormously and on the other because she became my business parter at b.frank books after I published her first book cudesch da visitas. Her second book with b.frank books is about the melting glaciers in Switzerland and the gigantic cloths that cover them in summer to slow down the melting process. The series features Ester’s very recognizable style of eerie, cinematic and sometimes abstract photographs that transform the glaciers into human-like shapes, showing their fragility and foreshadowing their possible extinction. Vonplon’s photographs are accompanied by a LP with (original) music by Stephan Eicher, ensuing from sound clippings of the lapping of melted glacier water. So turn up the volume and check out her beautiful slideshow which was made for the “Nuit de lAnnée 2015” at the Rencontres d’Arles to also get a sense of Stephan Eicher’s music. It offers a large variety of combinations, from basic colors to metallics, neons, and pastels.

Whether with or without a selfie stick, the smartphones have rendered the old photo booths almost obsolete. My good friend Moritz Frei’s series Selbstportraits pays tribute to Berlin’s last remaining machines that hold so many dear memories. Equally performance piece and photographic series, Frei “assists” the photo booths to “create” self portraits by placing a gigantic mirror inside and one in front of the machine. After inserting money into the slot, the kiosks finally get a chance to photograph “themselves". The Selbstportraits are wonderful collages, patchwork passport photos of photo booths, almost reminiscent of cubist portraits. http://www.moritzfrei.com/
