Artist Feature
Every week an artist is featured whose single image was published by Der Greif. The Feature shows the image in the original context of the series.
Roger Eberhard - James Nizam – Tumulus
Feb 24, 2016
"The ruins that Roger Eberhard and James Nizam photographically compose are the remains of once-inhabited wooden houses in a forested area of Canada. After the departure of their inhabitants, the houses perished. But can one even sensibly speak of ruins with regard to these shapeless heaps? The wood remains barely elevate from the surface of the earth, and most likely, will not be there for much longer. Even if no one clears them away, they will soon become overgrown, decay, and increasingly disappear into the surroundings. Already they seem to disguise themselves rather than rise as clear silhouettes, monumentally, in the way that ruins are usually depicted in art history. Church ruins on paintings by Caspar David Friedrich thus soar skyward, with a similar ruggedness as the mainly barren, bare branches of the surrounding trees.” Ludwig Seyfarth James Nizam 1977 born in Bedfordshire, England Lives in Vancouver, Canada Artist,www.jamesnizam.com Roger Eberhard 1984 born in Zurich, Switzerland Artist and publisher, www.rogereberhard.com Founder of b.frank books

James Nizam
Mar 02, 2016 - Roger Eberhard
My good friend James Nizam, with whom I collaborated on the project Tumulus, is a Canadian artist based in Vancouver. His deceptively simple geometric works invite a deconstruction of how light and shape inform our perceptions of space. Make sure to check out his new website to see more of his work. www.jamesnizam.com
Will Steacy
Mar 01, 2016 - Roger Eberhard
Ever since publishing the newspaper Deadline, which topped numerous best-of lists and won a special mention at the Paris-Photo Aperture book award last year, everyone knows that Will is thoroughly interested in the medium, the history and the social impact of newspapers. Already in his amazing collage Down These Mean Streets he used hundreds of newspaper clippings alongside his own large format photography to tell the story about the financial crisis in the US. Of all the newspaper works Will Steacy has made, the headline collages are amongst my favorite. They are absolutely amazing. Take your time and really read them. Marianna Rothen

With her photography she pays homage to a wonderful time in movie history. It only makes sense that Marianna also uses video in her art practice. Check out these cool trailers to some of her videos. Here's a link to her book. www.mariannarothen.com
Ester Vonplon – Gletscherfahrt
Feb 27, 2016 - Roger Eberhard
[vimeo video_id="143865219" width="1000" height="563“] It is always special to work with Ester Vonplon, on one side because I admire her work enormously and on the other because she became my business parter at b.frank books after I published her first book cudesch da visitas. Her second book with b.frank books is about the melting glaciers in Switzerland and the gigantic cloths that cover them in summer to slow down the melting process. The series features Ester’s very recognizable style of eerie, cinematic and sometimes abstract photographs that transform the glaciers into human-like shapes, showing their fragility and foreshadowing their possible extinction. Vonplon’s photographs are accompanied by a LP with (original) music by Stephan Eicher, ensuing from sound clippings of the lapping of melted glacier water. So turn up the volume and check out her beautiful slideshow which was made for the “Nuit de lAnnée 2015” at the Rencontres d’Arles to also get a sense of Stephan Eicher’s music. And here’s the link to the book.
Color Library
Feb 26, 2016 - Roger Eberhard
Since Der Greif is sort of having a Swiss month (Maya Rochat, Esther Mathis and now me) it's only suitable to feature the fantastic Color Library here too.
Color Library is a database of color profiles for artists, designers, photographers and printers who are looking for a novel yet professional color management solution. These new tools can convert images for printing devices using two, three, four, or five spot colors. It offers a large variety of combinations, from basic colors to metallics, neons, and pastels.

Feb 25, 2016 - Roger Eberhard
Whether with or without a selfie stick, the smartphones have rendered the old photo booths almost obsolete. My good friend Moritz Frei’s series Selbstportraits pays tribute to Berlin’s last remaining machines that hold so many dear memories. Equally performance piece and photographic series, Frei “assists” the photo booths to “create” self portraits by placing a gigantic mirror inside and one in front of the machine. After inserting money into the slot, the kiosks finally get a chance to photograph “themselves". The Selbstportraits are wonderful collages, patchwork passport photos of photo booths, almost reminiscent of cubist portraits. http://www.moritzfrei.com/
