Basil Al-Rawi

Photographer

My photographic practice is concerned with how images can mediate, rearrange and reconstruct our reality. I’m interested in using the syntax of the medium and its implicit connection with truth and ‘reality’ to interrogate aspects of our world. Often what we see is not always as it seems and I’m fascinated by photography’s ability to absorb us into carefully constructed fictions. For when we have become indifferent or oblivious to certain truths, fiction can refresh and recontextualise our response to them. Al-Rawi was born in 1981 and grew up in Ireland.
