EJ Hassan
Photographer
EJ Hassan is a photographic artist, currently living and working on the land of the Boonwurrung people, based in Melbourne, Australia. She explores the abstract realm between documentary & art photographies, centering her attention on the image making process, often within her own family. With a 20-year background in teaching, EJ focuses predominantly on the politics of identity & memory, specifically related to motherhood & youth. EJ is drawn to intimate & vulnerable relationships, embracing imperfections & the untouched moment. She finds value in working at a gentle pace; using a variety of methods & techniques to capture the internal space & emotive elements we witness in nature & people. EJ plays with both black & white, & colour photography; her rich use of colour paying homage to the unique light of the Australian landscape, & her nostalgic choice of black & white highlighting her curiosity & deep reverence for legacy & memory. Her intuitive & considered approach mimics the collaboration & lived experiences that influence her work, practice & style. EJ has recently completed a BA of Photography at Photography Studies College in Melbourne, majoring in Art. She was the recipient of Second place in the Animal category for the 2022 Australian Photo Awards and Finalist (Documentary, Environmental, Experimental and Student). EJ has exhibited at the Centre for Contemporary Photography, Monash Gallery of Art, Yarra Sculpture Gallery, CLIMARTE, Wolfhound and Magnet Gallery.
