Swedish artist Emma Bäcklund (b.1985) received a BA Hons in Photography from London College of Communication, University of the Arts, London (2015) and an MA in Photography from the Royal College of Art, London (2017). Backlund’s first solo show, Sloppy Tails (Grow from Walls), opened this October at A Corner With, (London UK) curated by Trine Stephenson, with an accompanying publication of idea sketches that will be published next year. The exhibition is made up of a video projection, performance drawing, sculptural and photographic works, which include hand prints as well as archival footage. Recent group exhibitions have included At Home She’s a Tourist, curated by Tom Lovelace in Copeland Gallery as part of Photo London and Peckham 24, (May 2017, London, UK) and Making It Real: Analogue LDN at Ugly Duck (October, 2017, London, UK). Recent publications include Curved Spine as part of Off-Print, Tate Modern (May 2017) Backlund is part of a peer group organised by Thom Bridge based at The Photographers Gallery in London until May, 2018. Backlund curates and writes alongside her practice. She worked as a Gallery assistant and curator at Lychee One gallery (2015 - 2017) where she curated Paper, Publication, Performance (15 April - 20 May, 2016) together with Jonathan Miles as well as the reading performance series Voice, Gesture, Sound, 2015 - Ongoing. She runs the publication S.KIN Journal which took part in Brighton Photo Biennale (October 2016).
