Farren van Wyk
Photographer
Farren van Wyk (1993) is a South African and Dutch photographer based in The Netherlands. She graduated from the University of Arts (HKU) in 2016 where she received her BA degree in Photography and is currently doing her Masters in Cultural & Social Anthropology and Sociology. The crux of her work is to portray people of color with dignity and make it a normality. Her work revolves around the question of how images visualise relationships between people and the world around them. Being born in South Africa and growing up in the Netherlands has created an awareness of having a double gaze that is just as much South African as it is Western. The dutch participation in colonialism, slavetrade and apartheid in South Africa is her heritage that she tries to grapple with through photography. More importantly, it refers to the idea of being able to participate in building a visual, and historical archive as a person of color. She was part of the GUP New Dutch Photography Talent Award. Her work has been featured by internationally based i-D, New Dawn Photography, and also with The Bubblegum Club and Through the Lens Collective in Johannesburg, South Africa. Other exhibitions were at De Melkweg Amsterdam, Photoville New York and she was a merit scholarship receiver for the Charcoal Book Club Chico Review in Montana, America.
