Gesche Würfel is a visual artist who is currently based in Chapel Hill, NC. She received her MFA in Studio Art from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, her M.A. in Photography and Urban Cultures from Goldsmiths, University of London, and her Diploma in Spatial Planning from the University of Dortmund, Germany. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in solo and group exhibitions; venues include Contemporary Art Museum Raleigh, NC; Blue Sky Gallery, OR; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MA; Tate Modern, UK; Goldsmiths College, UK; Curator’s Office, D.C.; Cornerhouse Manchester, UK. Her first monograph, Basement Sanctuaries, was published by Schilt Publishing in Spring 2014. Basement Sanctuaries was selected for the LensCulture Emerging Talent 2014 Awards and shortlisted in the Professional Architecture category of the Sony World Photography Awards 2014. In 2016, her project, “What Remains of the Day – 71 Years After the End of World War II” was selected a juror’s pick in the LensCulture Emerging Talent Awards. She is a recipient of grants among others from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance, and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. Würfel’s work was featured in The New York Times, The Guardian, WIRED, LensCulture, DIE ZEIT, Cahier Fotografie, Art Actuel, StadtBauwelt, ARTCO and was presented on WNYC – New York Public Radio and many other outlets.
