Huda Abdulmughni

Photographer

Huda Abdulmughni is a photographer whose work focuses on portraiture and place. From her student days in the late 1980s, Abdulmughni’s images and photographic projects are inspired by her curiosity for the world and in particular by people’s stories. She sets her subjects in their own unaltered environments, making use of natural light and familiar objects. Being adept at analogue and digital photography, Abdulmughni switches between both media depending on the subject in question. In recent years, she has taken workshops with Tanya Habjouqa, Yori Kozyrev, and Jodie Bieber. Abdulmughni’s photographs have been exhibited at the Sharjah Art Foundation (UAE), Boushahri Gallery (Kuwait), Shaheed Park (Kuwait), Tbilisi Photo Festival (Georgia), and Asia House (UK). She has participated as a speaker at the Gulf Photo Plus Slidefest (Bahrain), where she won an award for her presentation on the photographic series “Collective wedding in Yemen”. Her work has been published in Brownbook Magazine. In her first solo exhibition, Abdulmughni placed twelve life-size installations of her photographs of the historic storefronts from the oil town of Ahmadi across Kuwait City’s central marketplace, Souk Mubarakiya. In 2020, Abdulmughni was shortlisted along with 40 others for the International Women in Photo Association (IWPA) award. A selection of Abdulmughni’s photographs have been chosen for display at the upcoming Addis Foto Fest (AFF) 2020 and the International Exhibition of the FIF_BH.
