Kathryn Bawden

Photographer

Kat Bawden (she/they) is an artist whose work explores memory, consciousness, and the self. She works across photographs, handmade books, prose, and video installations to create an immersive visual world with its own sense of time. With a background in social science and public health, she draws influence from psychology, neuroscience, and dreams. They are an MFA student in photography at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where they were awarded a Graduate Merit Scholarship. Kat was a 2021 Critical Mass Finalist, winner of the 2021 Photolucida Gifted Book Award, and shortlisted for the 2021 Lucie Foundation Emerging Scholarship. Kat has self-published numerous zines and handmade books and has exhibited work at the International Center of Photography, Filter Photo Space, and the Los Angeles Center of Photography, among others. Their work has been featured in Lenscratch, A Photo Editor, and The Huffington Post, among other publications. They are an activist involved with reproductive rights, immigrants’ rights, and prison abolition. They divide their time between Chicago and Los Angeles.
