Marthanna Yater

Photographer

Born in Alaska, Marthanna Yater earned her degree in Human Development from the University of Alabama. During her graduate studies in Child Development at the University of Tennessee, she exchanged the confining corridors of graduate school for the college of Life. After a profound experience in the Australian Outback, she returned to the States and completed a core fellowship at Penland School of Crafts. Yater specializes in documenting women and children in organic settings. After traveling to 21 countries, Yater calls North Carolina home. Her work has been featured in Time, Oxford American, Don't Take Pictures, and other national and international magazines; The Fence photo exhibition; the Griffin Museum of Photography (Boston); the Center for Fine Art Photography (Fort Collins, CO); the front covers of novels, including Sylvia Plath's "The Bell Jar" (Faber and Faber, London) and Susan Ripps' "Sisters: Devoted or Divided" (Kensington Press, New York); and projects for ABC's Good Morning America, UNC, Duke, and Rice University Presses, HarperCollins, and projects in Singapore, Germany, and England. Her fine photography is internationally acclaimed, including the Award of Excellence in the Black and White Spider Awards (London), the Mardi Gras Judge's Choice Award (Atlanta), INFOCUS Merit Award (Palm Beach), and numerous International Photography Awards.
