Gemma Carosin

Gemma Carosin is a Queer-identifying conceptual photographer based in Cape Town, South Africa. Gemma was attracted to photography at a young age and was taught traditional photographic chemical processes as a fun childhood pastime by her mother and aunt. This interest was nurtured when she was allowed to attend the Peter Clarke Art Centre to take photography as an extra subject in high school. She has since found great fascination in digital photography as well as traditional processes. Gemma completed her final year of a Bachelors Degree in Fine Art at the University of Cape Town’s art school, Michaelis School of Fine Art in 2020. Gemma has also been working as an assistant to a local photographer while finishing up her studies. Gemma grew up in a small seaside village outside of central Cape Town, living in the same house from her birth until moving closer to the city centre to attend university. She often returns to this family home to photograph it and the surrounding community known for its fishermen and surfers. Gemma works primarily with the themes of family, gender and responsibility. Gemma is interested in narrative and the ability of an image to tell a story, especially stories from the LGBTQ+ community.
