Profile

Lena C. Emery

Photographer

The German-born, Singapore-raised photographer studied Fine Art at Parsons and subsequently worked as an independent art director in Berlin before moving to London in 2011. Growing up in South East Asia and traveling excessively from a young age, has given her the gift of familiarity with a variety of cultures and places, which in turn she has used to inform her unique vision. Working for the likes of Dior, Lemaire, Stella McCartney and Helmut Lang, Emery is also a regular contributor to publications such as The New York T Magazine, WSJ, M Le Monde, POP and The Gentlewoman. Emery was nominated for the FOAM Paul Huf award 2015 and was selected UK Winner by the Magenta Foundation within the Flash Forward Emerging Photographers 2016 Award. Her work has been featured in several books by Gestalten and will also be included in the upcoming ‘Fashion Photography Now’ by Rizolli. Her monograph RIE 理恵, which was launched at Paris Photo Nov 2016, was selected by the British Journal of Photography as one of the most exciting and engaging projects of 2016 and featured on their noteworthy photographers issue cover. RIE 理恵 comes as the culminating result of the ongoing intimate exchange Emery have sought out with the women in her photographs. Within the project, undertaken in Tokyo and titled after the woman on the cover and whose name means both ‘truth’ and ‘picture’, Emery wanted to embark on an inherently female dialogue on the subject of revealing.
