Matilde Viegas

Photographer

Matilde Viegas is a photographic artist based in Portugal, member of Women Photograph. Working with portraiture and documentary, Matilde’s work stems from her personal experience, documenting issues surrounding family, personal history, and identity with an empathic and observant approach. Her love for film and her scientific background in Chemistry led her to open a color darkroom. Matilde has been awarded the 2019 photojournalism grant Gabriel Grüner Stipendium alongside the writer and journalist Viktoria Morasch for the project “The City of the Deported” conducted in Kazakhstan. Her work has been commissioned by Monocle, Konfekt Magazine, Die Zeit, Taz, Iittalla Journal, Wine & Spirits, and recently featured on It's Nice That and Then There Was Us. In 2021, she was selected as one of the 5 finalists of the Film Photo Award, sponsored by Kodak, with the project Love Stories, and shortlisted for Belfast Photo Festival with project "The City of the Deported".
