Monica Alcazar-Duarte

Photographer

Originally from Mexico, I live and work in the U.K. I studied Filmmaking, Architecture and Documentary Photography. I am a former charity campaigner and currently work on independent research projects and for NGOs in England and abroad. I regularly collaborate with scientists and academics and explore ideas based on conjunct research. My photobook 'Your Photos could be used by drug dealers' was acquired in 2014 for artist book collections at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Yale University Gallery and the Joan Flasch Collection at the Arts Institute of Chicago. In 2017 I obtained the Magnum Graduate Award and The Photographers’ Gallery Bar-Tur Photobook Award. Two years ago I began leading Possible Landscapes, a participatory project using social media with young people in post-conflict countries. I have produced installations that have been exhibited in the U.K., The Netherlands, France, Spain, Portugal and Italy. Currently, I am mentoring five young photographers and have been asked to nominate new talent for platforms and awards in Europe. I taught at Central Saint Martins College in London. I seek always for collaborations. My work engages with the way that we read and integrate images and information. It examines the relationship between context and the image. I aim for viewers to participate within the ideas I present to them. I invite an audience to look at what appears as disconnected or even contradictory, with a discerning eye.
