Sandim Mendes

Sandim Mendes is a visual artist mostly working with mixed media, and she has a background in photography. Her work carries strong social aspects therefore she let herself be inspired by her direct surroundings and living conditions. Her main investigation touches upon the identities in and in-between, various cultures. For this she uses the historical and contemporary elements to reconstruct narratives and former (non)existing personalities. These are later on being presented in photographies, performances and movies. Due to the African diaspora, - as an african descent, she has a lack of information in family history as well. By filling the gap in her own family archives, she tries to question the stereotypes of the identity and gender issues. Today she still uses this fiction/non-fiction approach, yet she is more focused on the perception of the identity itself.
