Thembinkosi Hlatshwayo joined the Of Soul and Joy photography initiative, 2016. He subsequently began a body of work that focused on a particular space that promised betterment to individuals. The work titled ‘Betterment Promised’ was part of a group exhibition at a Photo Fest, Thokoza. Exhibited at Art Africa Fair, Capetown, 2017. In the same year he was part of a Photo Folio Review in the Arles Photo Fest. He is a 2018 alumnus of the Advance Programme in Photography at the Market Photo Workshop. Hlatshwayo’s current ongoing work is a confrontation of the silent traumas of growing up in a shebeen. He is the recipient of the 2019 Gisèle Wulfsohn Mentorship in Photography. He is one of the shortlisted artists of the CAP Prize 2019.
