In honor of the upcoming submission deadline for the Labs New Artists III Open Call, the Labs team caught up with some of the incredible alumni of Labs New Artists I and II. Here’s what they’ve been up to!
There is still one week left to apply for Labs New Artists III, opening this summer at Red Hook Labs in Brooklyn, NY, and traveling to Oslo and Milan in the fall. The show will include 25 unrepresented photographers, chosen from an international open call by a jury of industry leaders.

Since its inception, Red Hook Labs has set the pace for the steady emergence of new talent into the image making world. The Labs New Artists (LNA) exhibition program is an ongoing effort to provide sustained support to the most talented emerging artists in the world today. With the full attention of industry leaders and tastemakers alike, the LNA program offers a seat at the table to undiscovered artists; those with voices that are not often heard in the inner circles of opportunity.
We invite you to submit your work and join the Labs Artist community!

Luis Alberto Rodriguez (New York)
Since Labs New Artists II, Luis has collaborated with Carhart, Louis Vuitton, and Virgil Abloh as well as photographing Tilda Swinton for the cover of T Magazine China. He’s also been named one of the British Journal of Photography’s “ONES TO WATCH.” His goal for the next year? To get his own studio space.
The following, his most recent body of work entitled, ‘The People of the Mud,’ was created while in residency at Cow House Studios in Wexford, Ireland. A departure from the work he exhibited at Labs Gallery — colorful, exuberant images of Dominican youth — these images show a variation on his ability to create towering shapes and sculpture with the human body. The work was presented as a solo show opening the 10th anniversary of the PhotoIreland festival. The exhibition is up until July 31st at The Library Project, Dublin.

Joyce Ng (Hong Kong)
Chinese photographer, Joyce Ng, currently resides in London where she decided to stay after graduating from the Fashion Communication program at Central Saint Martins. She thinks most photos look best on Instagram.
Joyce’s work aesthetically inhabits the space between surrealism and film noir aesthetically, as she approaches fashion imagery with a delightful irreverence. The following are images from her most recent editorials for Dazed and ID, as well as a documentary project for Vogue photographed in rural China.
Since showing in the inaugural Labs New Artist exhibition in 2017, Joyce has become a regular contributor to Dazed, I-D, and Vogue. Her group exhibition, ‘English as a Second Language,’ with friend and collaborator, Hanna Moon, opened at Somerset House in London this past winter to record attendance and international press attention.
In the next year, she hopes to learn how to meditate.

Eli Durst (Austin, Texas)
Texas-born photographer, Eli Durst, continues to make hyperreal, intensely narrative images with a focus on group activities and recreation. We fell in love with his pictures of boy scout meetings in the basement of a Connecticut community center, and he’s continued photographing in this vein. The images shown above are from his series entitled, ‘The Community,’ which explores the activities taking place within multipurpose community spaces across America. Having returned to his home town to live and teach at the University of Texas, Austin, he’ll continue this series turning his lens towards the sprawling suburban culture of America’s Lone Star State.
The connections that Eli made through the Labs New Artist program helped him establish relationships with influential photo editors, which have given him access to the editorial world. He has recently shot for The New York Times and Pitchfork, and he’s excited to publish his first monograph this year with Mörel Books. Look out for it in the Fall!
